No One Asks to Die
I am writing you to Thank You for writing the article of Juan Manuel Nunez, III (RE: One More Senseless Death, April 27 edition) it's good to know that there is someone out there actually writing the truth instead of telling a long fairy tale that has so many twists and never once stating the truth. You had many good points in the article about the way the police and everyone handled this tragedy. And the truth is what everyone needs to know, he was a good person and so talented. Some people want to believe it was alcohol or maybe he was taunting the officer. No one asks to die and maybe this tragedy will open everyone’s eyes and it’s sad to know that it takes as much as someone dying for people to realize that there is so much going on in the community that is not right.
So thank you again for writing an inspiring article.

“We” the People pay the Price
Have you had enough of the present Republican administration?
They have everything to do with the high gasoline price's that are putting a heavy burden on the average income family and those who's income is at poverty level as well as those that are on a fixed income. The GOP's (Republican) arrogance, corruption (Tom Delay and others) and ruinous, right wing policies have left us (Americans) out in the cold. Records deficits, loss of jobs, the highest gasoline price's that we have ever seen, high health care cost, their attack on Social Security, and the senseless war in Iraq (over two thousand dead American Soldier's) with no end in site. And “WE” the people of this country are paying the price. I urge you to join me in voting Democrat at every opportunity.
Mr. Bush shows no concern with the needs of the ordinary American citizen like you and me!

Proud to be an American
When I awoke on the morning of May 1, I knew it would be a day I would not soon forget. It made me feel so proud to be American, when I drove up to the Parking lot of St. Michaels Catholic Church; there I saw at least 50 cars full of people ready to go and let their voice be heard: waiting to go to Lubbock to the march and rally.
It made me realize one thing; that America was still alive and well, that we still cared about our fellow man; our “hermano”.
I would like to thank Mrs. Arlene Brooks and Mrs. Digennaro and their staff at CARVER ADULT LEARNING CENTER in Levelland for all that you do for our migrants and the Hispanic community. Both of them have really inspired me to reach out to all Americans and you truly understand what social justice means. To Dr. John Booth, thanks for you’re support of our kids and families that went to march on May 1st; you also understand social justice. Thanks also to Dario Rendón, Jr. and Vicki Hernandez for all you do for our people. I would also like to thank Bidal Aguero for having the courage to obtain the permit so that we could all march and rally; men like you are hard to find.
Thank you also to the only radio station that came to Levelland and followed us all the way to Lubbock. To the staff at “La Ley”, “thanks a million, you showed us you were willing to stand up for the right of freedom of the press. A great big: “thank you” to the people of Levelland, Sundown, Whiteface, Morton, Muleshoe, Littlefield, and all the West Texas cities that joined us in Lubbock. I really believe that had it not been for all these people that I just mentioned the march would never have happened.
To all of those of you that jumped on the band wagon and want to take credit for what took place that day, you better take a long look at yourself. Example I read somewhere that what Nephtali De Leon said was wrong. Well let me remind all of you that all he was doing was expressing his right of free speech. Sometimes we forget what our grandparents and parents went through so we could have the right to march and rally! And just because our poet doesn’t sound politically correct we want to dog him out and say that he is wrong. I was deeply saddened when I saw some people try to stop him from saying what he had to say.
I DONT KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT I AM AMERICAN AND I AM TIRED OF BEING TREATED LIKE A SECOND CLASS CITIZEN! IF A MAN STANDS FOR NOTHING THEN HE WILL FALL FOR ANYTHING!!!!!!!!! Manuel Méndez Jr., Levelland, TX, via Email Juan Manuel Núñez III
I want to thank you for your article in the El Editor. I was Juan's fiancé
and your article made me feel good after all the other papers made him seem
like he was an angry, violent monster. That was just the opposite of the
way he was. We planned to grow old together and that was taken away from me
all too soon. He loved me and I loved him and he took very good care of my
son and me. He was a smart and caring man who made me the happiest woman on
earth.
