While the Lubbock area continues to enjoy fairly low unemployment; the US Labor Department reported this past week that 159,000 jobs were lost in September. That brings the total to 750 thousand jobs lost this year alone. September marks the ninth straight month of job losses.
Considering what is going on with Wall Street and the economic crisis; that number is sure to grow in October. The jobs loss is sure to worsen the housing crisis and make it more difficult for typical Americans to pay their mortgages and other bills.
In some markets; the national media was reporting that some unemployed workers were being forced to wait for up to 3 or 4 weeks for their unemployment checks since the agencies were being overwhelmed by the number of people applying for benefits.
