According to a report in the Austin American Statesman; State Rep. Leo Berman from Tyler has asked the state Attorney General to rule on whether “providing college tuition benefits to illegal immigrants violates federal law”.
Berman cites a recent ruling by a California Appellate Court which recently ruled that giving state financial aid in that state is unlawful. His assumption is that if it is illegal in California; it must also be illegal here in Texas.
This is not Berman’s first attempt to try and address the issue of immigration through anti-immigration rulings and laws. In 2007, Berman tried to pass anti-immigration laws and has said that he will introduce bills to tax money sent by immigrants to Mexico and will also try to “challenge the citizenship of the U.S. born children” of people who are in the country undocumented, according to the report.
