As the deadline to file for city council elections passed at 5PM on Monday March 8, 2010, city residents found out who will be campaigning to represent them on the Lubbock City Council.
Although only 3 of the 6 district seats are contested on a 4 year rotating basis, the race for Mayor is contested every 2 years.
Three candidates will be campaigning to win the seat being vacated by current District 1 Councilwoman Linda DeLeon.
Local attorney and former District 1 Councilman Victor Hernandez made it official on Friday March 5; fulfilling an announcement he made earlier this year when he first publicly revealed his intention to run for the seat.
Hernandez issued a media statement in which he stated: “I am humbled and deeply appreciative of the fact that so many people from across the District and the City have shown such great support of the efforts taken thus far in my bid for my old City Council seat. I, along with many individuals from across District 1 and the City, will knock on every door and ask every person for their help and their vote.”
Hernandez is well known among District 1 voters and across the city after having served as District 1 representative for about 11 years from 1993 until 2004.
Local businessman Glenn Robertson also filed for the seat; as did Rafael Gutierrez II.
In the race for Mayor, current Mayor Tom Martin drew three challengers including former Mayoral candidate Roger Settler, Richard Quade and Tech student Cody Smart.
In District 3, Todd Klein will run unopposed. In the west Lubbock District 5 race; Karen Gibson and Stephan Lampman will face off to replace outgoing Councilman John Leonard.
