I believe that, as a general rule, as one gets older, one appreciates to a much greater degree, the friendships one has made throughout the years.
Today, I am blessed to be surrounded by many friends that we have made throughout many, many years of both public service and outside of public service.
But particularly interesting to me is that, I am surrounded today by friends who, at times past, were not necessarily friendly to each other. And for that, I am especially appreciative. Some would even go as far as saying that today, the lion and the lamb have come together to support District 1.
But if you look closer, if you look into each of the faces here today, you will find that there exists common ground amongst old adversaries. Yes, many here are elected officials, both past and present, but many more of those present are, leaders of their families, their churches, their neighborhoods, and of the community as a whole.
But to truly understand what that commonality is, that binds us all, you have to look into the hearts of the men and women here today.
The common ground which I speak of is that, they care about someone other than themselves. They care about what happens to their friends yes, but more importantly, they care about strangers they’ve never met.
