District 1 voters and perhaps Lubbock residents in general are probably wondering just “what the hell is going on” after the long simmering cauldron of political animosity between Lubbock City Councilwoman Linda DeLeon and former Councilman Victor Hernandez finally erupted.
As early voting began on Monday, the rhetoric escalated into a full fledged political war with DeLeon taking written and verbal shots at her predecessor Victor Hernandez; as he tries to regain the seat he once held.
What is still not clear to many voters in District 1 is “why” DeLeon has decided to interject herself in an election she is not a candidate in? Many people have speculated that DeLeon will be leaving Lubbock after her term is up; something which DeLeon has not publicly denied; making her recent statements in the local media even more puzzling.
But a look at the two most recent events between the two “politicos” might give a hint as to why DeLeon has taken the step of endorsing one of Hernandez’s opponents.
First, DeLeon faced off against Hernandez in 2006 in the race for District 1. Second, the recall effort lodged against DeLeon also saw some involvement from Hernandez.
During the petition signing period, Hernandez wrote and sent a letter to petition signers writing “Do not allow yourselves to be bullied by anyone, and do not stand still if you are threatened by anyone”; presumably referring to DeLeon and some of her supporters.
Perhaps the political wounds from those two events are still well remembered and not yet fully healed.
