voting for someone only because of the color of his or her skin, but rather voting for someone who reflects who they are, their political views, and their cultural makeup.
They feel more comfortable voting for someone who looks like them, relates to them culturally, speaks their native language, shares their historical background, shares their struggles and shares their frustration with political systems still dominated by elected officials who may not be in sync with the community’s needs and concerns and especially share their hopes and dreams for the future.
We strongly disagree with Mrs. DeLeon’s assessment of the race for District 1 and in her reasoning for endorsing Mr. Robertson, but that is her right. And we have no quarrel with Mr. Robertson and wish him well in his campaign.
We just feel that Mr. Hernandez’s similar cultural perspective and prior political experience on the council and time spent away from the council; will now serve the community well if he should be successful and win.
Our concern is the long term effect Mrs. DeLeon’s statement has already had on the community as this newspaper has received calls from readers asking why Mrs. DeLeon has taken the position that she has.
To us it is a contradiction of political principles.
We would ask Mrs. DeLeon to consider this question: Why were the lawsuits to force single member districts filed in the first place? If minority representation and equal access was not a problem then, why did those individuals like the late publisher of this newspaper Bidal Aguero, decide to accept political and economic consequences to participate in the LISD lawsuit?
