ODESSA GROUP TO JOIN FREEDOM CARAVAN IN PROTEST OF ARIZONA ANTI-IMMIGRANT BILL

Bookmark and Share

Members of “Una Voz Unida” (UVA), a non-profit civic association based in Odessa, Texas, will be joining Dallas LULAC Council 102 on what they are calling: “Freedom caravan to Arizona”.

According to UVA organizer Dominic Leal, the “purpose of the caravan is to show solidarity within the Latino Community against (the) new Arizona Law SB1070.”

Since the anti-immigration law was passed by the Arizona state legislature and signed by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, many Hispanics/Latinos have been wondering how to express their solidarity with Mexican American immigrants and other Hispanics in Arizona.

The law itself allows local and state police to question people about their citizenship status based on a reasonable suspicion alone that they may be in this country illegally. This has brought about speculation that police will engage in racial profiling and anyone who looks “Mexican” will be subject to suspicion; even if they were born in this country.

Some people have also speculated that American Hispanics will be forced to carry their birth certificate just in case they are questioned and asked to prove their citizenship.

The caravan’s buses are expected to arrive in Odessa from Dallas, TX on Thursday May 13, around 1PM. The group from Dallas led by Dallas attorney and LULAC 102 President Domingo Garcia is scheduled to have lunch at a local restaurant called La Margarita’s in Odessa before continuing on their trip.

Leal told El Editor.Com that he expected that the “bus will be loaded with supporters”. He says that the plan is to stop in Odessa, El Paso, Las Cruces, New Mexico and Tucson on their way to Phoenix.

He says his hope is that “others will follow as they arrive in Arizona”.

Leal also says that their “agenda consists of actions that will take place throughout Phoenix. These will include marches, peaceful protests, as well as press conferences throughout Arizona. Other actions items are planned but we won’t be aware of them until we arrive”.

Anyone wishing to join the FREEDOM BUSES to Arizona can contact Dominic Leal, Una Voz Unida of Odessa Organizer, at (817)223-0503 as soon as possible to secure your seat and room. Monetary donations are accepted but not required.
