The passage of the anti immigrant law in Arizona three weeks ago has provoked widespread criticism, large protest marches in some US cities and disapproval from groups and organizations throughout the country.
Here in Lubbock, “a grassroots coalition of area citizens, led by Communities In United Discourse Against Discrimination, or CUIDAD, is mobilizing to oppose the recently passed Arizona immigration law and its precedent”, according to a press release sent out by the group.
¡CIUDAD! is a non-partisan organization of men and women united in support of the traditional American beliefs in liberty and justice for all.
The coalition will identify and hold accountable local city, county, state and national leaders who support immigration legislation similar to the Arizona law.
Daniel Sanchez, a member of ¡CIUDAD!, said, “While we acknowledge that immigration reform is needed, legislation such as this undermines the civil liberties of United States citizens.”
The organization will hold a press conference on Tuesday May 18, 2010 at 10:00AM at the east entrance to Lubbock City Hall located at 1625 13th St.
The group hopes that its actions and future efforts will contribute and work toward the reversal of the Arizona law; and it will also closely monitor all proposed immigration legislation in Texas.
Persons interested in joining the effort or learning more about the organization can contact Daniel Sanchez at 806-544-6301 or Kate Hutson 806-745-2007
