Hernandez Wins by Skin of His Teeth in June 12 Runoff for District One Both Sides Increase Precinct Turnout in Effort to Win

Former City Council Member Victor Hernandez defeated Lubbock businessman Glen Robertson by a narrow ten vote margin June 12 in which more voters participated than in the Mayoral-Council-School Board races of May 8. Robertson, aided by Linda DeLeon, the outgoing City Council member for District One, gained 161more votes than May 8 while Hernandez won 145 more votes in a turnout of 10.4% of the registered voters in District One. In May, 8.9% of District One voters went to the polls compared to a county-wide turnout of 9.4%, a figure which shows that both campaigns benefited from door to door canvassing and telephone calling.


District One voters also took advantage of early voting with 1,119 voters (73.9%) of 1,517 total voters casting ballots at United Supermarket Stores and other venues and only 395 (26.1%) going to the polls on election day. On May 8, 73.6% of 1,298 voters cast early ballots and 26.4% on election day.

Robertson Does Best in the Far North and the Far South

Robertson's biggest gains came in Precinct One (Wolffarth and Hillcrest neighborhoods) where he increased his support by 28 votes while Hernandez lost 41 votes. In Precinct Two the Arnett-Lubbock Country Club area, Robertson won 70 more votes while Hernandez gained 16 more voters.
In the southern end of the district, DeLeon's support increased Robertson's share of the vote from 107 of 149 votes (76.4%) votes in May to 154 votes (88.1%) out of 174 votes. The ...
