Primeramente, de parte de mi y mi familia, les quiero dar la bien venida y las gracias a todos nuestros familiares, amigos y al publico que esta aqui con nosotros y a los que no pudieron estar con nosotros hoy.
First of all, on behalf of myself and my family, I’d like to welcome and thank family members, friends and members of the public who are with us here today.
I’d also like to thank Father Rene Perez of St. Theresa Catholic Church for the invocation and District Court Judge Ruben Reyes for making time to come down to administer the oath of office.
Before I start my formal remarks, I’d also like to introduce my family. My wife, The Honorable Aurora Chaides-Hernandez. My sons Benjamin Nicolas and Antonio Gerardo. And my daughter Maria Alexandra. Our oldest child, Gabriela Victoria couldn’t be with us today because she’s in Chicago serving an internship with the Archdiocese of Chicago.
When I formally announced my intention to run for City Council a few months ago, the theme was, “If you want Peace, Work for Justice,” words of wisdom spoken by Pope Paul IV many years ago. At this time I’d like to reiterate a few of those remarks.
I said it back then and I believe it now, that District 1 needs someone who will work for justice. Someone who is not afraid to speak up when an injustice is occurring. Someone who believes that city government has a role to play, not only in providing core city services but a role in providing for broader societal needs.
