While we remain skeptical of how easily the proponents of the bond election say they can repay the bond debt without raising taxes; we are strong believers in quality and equal education.
And we would also note that while the tax rate may not go up, tax valuations inevitably will, thereby increasing the amount we all pay in school taxes.
We also feel strongly that the high LISD drop out rate needs to be addressed more vigorously. We applaud Superintendent Garza’s effort called “Expectation Graduation” but feel that more needs to be done. While it is true that bond money cannot be used on this issue, it is one that should concern all of us, especially when a large percentage of high school dropouts are of Hispanic decent.
But in studying the proposed plan, we feel that the long term benefits outweigh the negatives.
The proposed safety and security, and technology improvements cannot be argued with. And the other school and academic improvements may help to address academic issues as well. And we also hope that the committee assigned to oversee the projects will include residents from north, north central and east Lubbock so that we may have a fair representation.
And while we are at it; we would offer this suggestion to District 1 School Board Member Mario Ybarra: “Get more involved with the community, with parents of school children, and your constituents.”
We couldn’t help but notice that his voice was mostly silent, up until just recently, on this issue within the mostly Hispanic community which he represents. Constituents count on their representatives to be their voice and communicate back to them so they may make an informed decision.
In this election we say vote “yes”.
