Gonzalo Barrientos, Jr., Tejano Democrats State Chair
With many chapters already chartered throughout the state, a group of Lubbock residents will join the statewide network known as Tejano Democrats with their own Lubbock chapter.
According to organizers, the group’s purpose is to “develop a broader-based and more effective “Voz del Pueblo”, and to seek full representation of Hispanics at all levels and in all activities of the Democrat Party”.
With that in mind, local organizers will welcome former Texas State Senator Gonzalo Barrientos Jr., who currently presides as state chair of the group. Barrientos is a former Democratic member of the Texas Senate representing the 14th District from 1985 to 2007. He was also a member of the Texas House of Representatives from Austin from 1975 to 1985.
On Friday, March 25, a reception and membership drive will be held at the law firm of Glasheen, Valles & Inderman, located at 1302 Texas Avenue. The event will take place from 7PM - 9PM.
According to Olga Aguero, one of the primary organizers, “we would like to invite everyone who is interested in making a difference in the political process that shapes social and legal policy. Only by getting involved at this grassroots level can we expect to make a difference.”
Tejano Democrats is a statewide organization with chapters in several Texas cities and regions. Some of the larger chapters are in Houston, Ft. Worth, North Texas, Austin and South Texas among others.
The group also hopes “to develop and encourage young leadership for the Democratic Party; to empower those committed to the Democratic Party mission and to protect the future of the children and youth in our Lubbock community”.
The Friday night event will be followed by the official charter ceremony on Saturday morning beginning at 9AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church ...
